About the artist



Honored Artist of Ukraine.
Winner of the Ivan Trush Regional Art Prize.

Yuriy was born May 1, 1947 in the village of Kovalivka, Kolomeya raion, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast. He graduated from the M.B. Hrekov Odessa State Art College (1968) and Kyiv State Art Institute (1972).

He lives in Lviv, works at the Ivan Trush Lviv College of Decorative and Applied Arts, where he manages the department of painting. Yuriy has been a participant in more than ninety national, regional and international art exhibits. He has participated in many group exhibitions, including exhibits abroad in such countries as Poland and USA.

To date Yuriy Lesiuk has displayed his works in 11 solo art exhibitions in the museums of Kyiv, Lviv, Kolomeya, Ivano-Frankivsk (Ukraine), Regina, Saskatoon, Toronto (Canada), and New York (USA). His easel paintings take on various genres – portrait, still life, and landscape. Most of the works, however. are devoted to the genre composition of the daily life of the Carpathian people, their customs and traditions. Some of his work has focused on Hutsul weddings.

They are very creative, decorative, whimsical compositions with a healthy sense of humour. A great portion of the works display wonderful, nostalgic memories of customs and way the of life of his youth. His art focuses on ethnic, musical, poetic, folk customs of that time which are quickly disappearing as a result of globalization and overall evolutionary process.
